The San Francisco 49ers stayed unbeaten with a 26-21 road win over the New Orleans Saints at the Caesars Superdome. In QBMac Jones' first start with the 49ers, the offense controlled tempo, RBChristian McCaffreyshowcased his versatility, and the defense closed strong with game-sealing pressure. Special teams also provided steady contributions in a complete team effort.
Here are five takeaways from the 49ers-Saints game:
Jones Commands the Offense in First Start
Filling in forBrock Purdy, Jones looked poised in his first start with the 49ers. He directed a 14-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on his opening series, then added two more scores. First, an 11-yard touchdown pass to TELuke Farrell, a scoring throw to McCaffrey before halftime, and a 42-yard bomb to WRJauan Jenningsin the fourth quarter. Jones finished the day with 26 completions on 39 attempts for 279 yards, and his composure helped the 49ers sustain drives against the Saints defense.
McCaffrey Does It Again
The All-Pro back once again proved why he's one of the league's most dynamic playmakers. He found success both on the ground and through the air, including a receiving touchdown that sent the 49ers into halftime with a 16-7 lead. McCaffrey closed out the day with a total of 107 scrimmage yards, his second-straight 100+ total yard game.
Jennings Delivers in the Clutch
The wideout was a difference-maker in the passing game. Jennings' 29-yard grab set up McCaffrey's touchdown, and his 42-yard scoring catch midway through the fourth quarter gave the 49ers crucial separation. Jennings led the contest in receiving yards, with 89 on five catches for an average of 17.8 yards per reception.
Defense Makes Plays
The 49ers defense kept constant pressure on Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler. LBFred Warnerforced and recovered a fumble, while CBUpton Stout, DLBryce Huff, and DLNick Bosaeach delivered sacks. The Saints pulled within one score late in the contest, but San Francisco's front answered with sacks from Bosa and Huff to close the game. Timely stops defined another resilient defensive performance in Week 2.
Special Teams Steady on the Road
KickerEddy Pieiromade his 49ers debut just days after joining the team on Wednesday and showed poise in a tough road environment. The veteran kicker went 2-for-2 on field goals and accounted for eight total points, with his lone miss coming on an extra point. The Saints, meanwhile, left points on the board with a first-quarter miss of their own, giving San Francisco the edge in special teams efficiency.
The 49ers improve to 2-0 and now return home for their regular-season debut at Levi's Stadium, hosting the Arizona Cardinals on September 21 in Week 3.
