Cape Town - Newcastle United have confirmed that manager Rafael Benitez will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month.
The Spaniard was lured to St James' Park by owner Mike Ashley midway in the 2016/17 season to save the club from the dreaded relegation.
However, it was not to be as the Magpies spent the following season in the Championship with Benitez remaining at the club guiding them straight back to top flight football.
The 2018/19 campaign was always going to be a tough year with Ashley refusing to invest heavily on transfers.
Fans have had hopes of Ashley selling the club but the owner seems reluctant to let go despite offers from Dubai-based Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Newcastle open their Premier League campaign against Arsenal when the season kicks off in August.
