Charles among RBs to visit Saints

Free-agent running back Jamaal Charles is expected to visit the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

That Saints are looking at a number of running backs, with Tim Hightower in for a tryout during Tuesday's minicamp and Terrance West also scheduled to make a visit this week.

Charles will be visiting the club following nine seasons in Kansas City and one in Denver in 2017. The 31-year-old Charles had 69 carries for 296 yards to go along with 23 receptions for 129 yards receiving last season with the Broncos.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Charles was released by Kansas City in February 2017 after becoming the Chiefs' career rushing leader.

West appeared in only five games for the Baltimore Ravens last season before suffering a calf injury on Oct. 8. He finished with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries.

The 5-foot-10, 225-pounder had his best season in 2016, establishing career highs by rushing for 774 yards and five touchdowns on 193 carries.

A former third-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2014, West rushed for 673 yards and four touchdowns during his rookie campaign.

West was traded to the Tennessee Titans but appeared in just two games before he was released by the team in 2015. He was claimed by Baltimore and spent most of the past three seasons with the Ravens.

Hightower did not play in 2017 after he was released prior to the start of the season. He spent the previous two seasons with New Orleans after being off the field for three-plus years because of a knee injury.

The 6-foot, 220-pound Hightower recorded a combined 923 rushing yards, 329 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2015 and 2016 at a backup to Mark Ingram.

The Saints are looking for depth at running back with Ingram set to begin the season by serving a four-game suspension for violating the league policy for performance-enhancing substances. The former Heisman Trophy winner will be eligible to return to the Saints' active roster on Monday, Oct. 1.

Ingram was selected to his second Pro Bowl last season after rushing for career highs in yards (1,124) and touchdowns (12). He also caught 58 passes for 416 yards.

New Orleans has a capable replacement in electrifying Alvin Kamara, who was named the NFL Rookie of the Year last season.

Kamara rushed for 728 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry, and also amassed 81 receptions for five more scores.
