Canucks C Granlund to have wrist surgery

Sports Xchange - Tuesday 21st March, 2017

Vancouver Canucks center Markus Granlund will undergo season-ending wrist surgery, the team announced Monday.

"Markus has had an ongoing wrist injury which we've treated through regular maintenance and rehabilitation," Vancouver general manager Jim Benning said in a press release. "Our Canucks medical team and Markus believe that surgery is the best course of action for his long-term health and by having the procedure now it will allow him to have more time to rehabilitate and work out in preparation for next season."

Granlund has collected a career-high 19 goals in 69 games this season. He is one tally behind fellow forward Bo Horvat for the team lead. The 23-year-old Finn's 13 assists are also a personal best.

"Losing a guy like him is going to be tough for us," Horvat told the Vancouver Sun. "He was a huge part of our team and had a pretty impressive year. It just shows his character. (His wrist) has pretty much been bugging him all year -- and even for the last couple of years -- and for him to play through that is impressive."

Granlund was acquired in a trade with the Calgary Flames for forward Hunter Shinkaruk on Feb. 22, 2016.
